KidsMatter is a National initiative that aims to improve students’ mental health and wellbeing. Children can be exposed to increasingly challenging circumstances such as, family breakdown, parental mental illness, poverty and racism. Children who do not receive adequate support or who have less effective coping skills may develop emotional or behavioural problems and will carry the burden into adult life where their mental health is likely to be affected. Currently one in five adults are affected by mental health issues.
At Gowrie Primary we are attempting to combat this by creating a positive school community, teaching social and emotional literacy, offering parenting support and education and lastly providing early intervention for students experiencing mental health difficulties.
